Relations in your words

Not “father’s brother’s son”. Chachazad.

Families don’t talk in English genealogy terms. Shajra shows every relation the way you actually say it — with the English meaning right beside it — and works out what everyone is to you automatically.

Features

Everything your family needs to keep its shajra alive

Simple enough for Nani on her phone, careful enough to keep the whole tree correct.

Interactive tree

Pan, pinch and zoom across generations. Tap anyone to open their profile, double-click to edit.

Relations, worked out

Add people once — Shajra tells each member what everyone is to them, in everyday words.

Smart family rules

No one gets two fathers or mothers, gender follows the relation, and a sole spouse automatically becomes the other parent of the children.

Simple profiles

Name, nickname, photo, birth and death dates, birth place, city and a short “about” — nothing more.

Lock your profile

Anyone can lock their own profile so only they can edit it. Your details stay exactly as you wrote them.

Linked trees

Connect with another family’s tree at a shared person, so each branch can be kept by its own people.

Print or save as PDF

Print the whole tree on a single landscape page — perfect for framing or the next family gathering.

Install as an app

Add Shajra to your home screen like a regular app. Your tree stays viewable even when you’re offline.

How it works

From one name to the whole family in three steps

  1. Create your tree

Sign up and start your family’s tree. As its creator you’re the admin — you decide who gets in.

  2. Invite your relatives

Share your invite link on the family group. You approve each person before they can see anything.

  3. Grow it together

Everyone adds the people they know. Shajra connects the branches and shows each member their own relations.

Privacy & ownership

Your family’s tree belongs to your family

There is no public directory of families. Nobody can search for your tree, and nobody sees it until your admin says yes.

  • Invite link + admin approval

Relatives join with your family’s invite link, and the admin approves each one before they can see anything.

  • Lock your own profile

Each person can lock their profile so only they can change it.

  • Co-admins & next of kin

Add co-admins and choose a next of kin who can take over if the admin passes away or stops being active.

  • Export any time

Download your whole family tree whenever you like. Your data stays yours.

  • Deliberately minimal data

No phone numbers, no ID numbers. Just what a family tree needs.

Two family trees linked at a shared person The Ahmed family tree on the left and Hamza’s branch on the right are linked at Hamza, who appears in both. Each tree keeps its own admin and members. Linked trees

Big families, many branches — still one shajra

When Chachu’s descendants want to keep their own branch, they don’t need to fork the family. Two trees can link at a shared person so you can follow the family across both.

  • Link at the person both trees share — like a brother whose branch is kept by his own children
  • Both admins must agree before a link is made
  • Linking never makes anyone a member of the other family

FAQ

Questions families ask

Still wondering about something? Start a tree for free and look around — nothing is visible to anyone you haven’t approved.

Can strangers find or see our family tree?

No. There is no public directory of families. Relatives join through your invite link, and the admin must approve each person before they can see anything.

Who controls the tree?

Whoever creates the tree is its admin. The admin can add co-admins to help approve members and keep things tidy.

What happens if the admin passes away or stops using the app?

The admin can name a “next of kin” who is able to take over if the admin passes away or becomes inactive, so the family’s tree is never stuck.

How does Shajra know Chachu from Mamu?

You add people by their relation to someone already in the tree. Shajra follows the connections and shows what every person is to you — Mother’s brother becomes Mamu, Father’s sister’s child becomes Phuphizad — each with its English meaning.

Can someone else change my details?

You can lock your own profile so that only you can edit it.

Can we connect with another family’s tree?

Yes. Two trees can be linked at a person they share, once both admins agree. Linking doesn’t make anyone a member of the other family.

What information do you collect?

Only what a family tree needs: name, nickname, photo, birth and death dates, birth place, city and a short “about”. We don’t ask for phone numbers or ID numbers.

Can I get our data out?

Yes — export the whole family tree any time. You can also print it on one landscape page or save it as a PDF.

Is there a mobile app?

Shajra installs straight from your browser onto your phone’s home screen and works like an app, including viewing your tree offline.

What does Shajra Plus include?

Shajra Plus removes ads for every member of your family and adds priority support. It’s a simple yearly price per family — you’ll see it in the app.
