Shajra (“we”, “us”) is a family-tree service at shajra.313bits.com and 313bits.com, run by 313bits. This policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have.
1. Information we collect
Information you give us
- Account details: your name, email address and password. Passwords are stored only as a secure one-way hash; we cannot read them.
- Family tree content: the people you and your relatives add — names, nicknames, gender, dates of birth and death, birth place, city, a short note, photos — and the relations between them.
- Membership details: which family trees you belong to, your role (admin or member), and any message you send with a request to join.
We deliberately do not ask for phone numbers, national ID numbers, addresses or payment card numbers.
Information collected automatically
- Session cookie: a cookie named
shajra_sessionthat keeps you logged in. It is required for the service to work. - Activity time: when your account was last active, used to hand a family tree to its next of kin if its admin is no longer active.
- Technical logs: our servers record standard request information (such as IP address, browser type and time of request) for security and to fix problems. These logs are kept for a limited time.
2. How we use information
- To provide the service: show your family tree, work out relations, let admins approve members and link trees.
- To keep the service secure, prevent abuse and fix errors.
- To show advertising (see section 4) and to process Shajra Plus subscriptions.
- To reply when you contact us.
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use the content of your family tree to target advertising.
3. Who can see your family tree
Every family tree is private. Only people the tree's admin has approved can see it. There is no public directory or search of families. When two trees are linked at a shared person, members of one tree can see the other tree's name and ask to join, but cannot see its contents until that tree's admin approves them. Photos are only shown to members of the person's family tree.
4. Advertising and Google AdSense
Shajra is free and supported by advertising served by Google AdSense. Families with Shajra Plus see no ads.
- Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on a user's prior visits to this website or other websites.
- Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visit to our sites and/or other sites on the Internet.
- You may opt out of personalised advertising by visiting Google Ads Settings. You can also opt out of some third-party vendors' use of cookies for personalised advertising at www.aboutads.info.
- Learn more about how Google uses information from sites that use its services.
Visitors in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland are asked for consent before personalised ads are shown, using a consent message provided by Google. You can change your choice at any time from the privacy settings link shown with that message.
Visitors in US states with privacy laws can opt out of the sale or sharing of their personal information for advertising using the “Do not sell or share my personal information” link shown on the site.
5. Payments
Shajra Plus payments are handled by Stripe. We never see or store your card details; we only receive confirmation of the subscription and a customer reference.
6. Service providers
We use trusted providers to run Shajra: cloud hosting (Google Cloud), Google Fonts for the typeface, Google AdSense for ads, and Stripe for payments. They process information only as needed to provide their services.
7. How long we keep information
We keep your account and family tree for as long as your account and family tree exist. Daily backups are kept for 14 days. When you delete your account, your account details and memberships are removed; family trees in which you were the only member are deleted with it. People you added to a shared family tree remain part of that family's tree, which belongs to the family.
8. Your choices and rights
- Access and correction: you can view and edit your profile at any time, and lock it so only you can change it.
- Export: family tree admins can download the whole tree, including photos.
- Deletion: you can delete your account from Account → Delete my account. You can also ask us to remove information about you from a family tree by contacting us.
- Depending on where you live, you may have further rights (for example under the GDPR or US state privacy laws), such as objecting to processing or requesting a copy of your data. Contact us to use them.
9. Children
Shajra accounts are for people aged 13 and over. Family trees may include children, added by their parents or relatives as part of the family record; the tree's admin and the child's parents can edit or remove that information at any time. If you believe a child under 13 has created an account, please contact us and we will delete it.
10. Security
All connections to Shajra use HTTPS. Passwords are hashed, the database is not reachable from the internet, and access to family trees is checked on every request. No system is perfectly secure, but we work to protect your information.
11. Changes to this policy
If we change this policy we will update the date at the top of this page, and for significant changes we will let users know in the app.
